Are you ready for some FOOTBALL???

So my boys needed helmets. You would have never known by looking a Mitchell, but if you looked at Matthew you would see that the side of his head was very flat and pushed his left side of his face forward (that part you may not be able to tell). Anyway after a consultation they both qualified for the DOC bands.

These first pics are of them at the Dr. getting their 3D image. It was really cool to see how these bands are created. They used to make molds from plaster, but in the last year or two they changed that. Mitchie was fine with the nylon over his head, but Matthew had two meltdowns, i tried nursing him, giving him a Binky and then a bottle, and the bottle calmed him and it was smooth sailing from there. THey put this nylon on so that the 3d pic could be as accurate as possible with no hair in the way.14 days later the helmets were ready to be fitted and wah-lah! My boys wear helmets. The first couple of days i was miserable for them because they SWEAT like crazy under them and it was HOT here in VEGAS! After a few days of not much wearing, i decided it was time to stick with it and they haven't been off much since. They are to be worn 23 hours a day and the one hour off is for bathing and cleaning the bands. BOY DO THEY STINK!!!!!!! Woah! There heads stink and i swear a bath doesn't even take all the stink away.

SO jason had the idea to paint them like real football helmets. I vetoed that and then had a change of heart because of Jayne and decided that it would be cuter than the regular bands. So on Saturday after a full 24 hours off there heads the masterpieces were finished! I did all of it freehand and it was hard because i was also fighting off the flu that day! I think they turned out pretty cute especially since i had no trace marks, just my old trusty hand to make straight lines, and the Y turned out pretty cute too. I am not a Camille Kingman so I didn't think i would be able to do this, but it turns out my cutting hair skills came in handy as i had to be straight and very meticulous. By the time i did the black stripe i was over it, so don't look close! The acrylic paint chips very easy on this material so i had to seal it like 3 times and i can tell it is time to do it again. These really are cute on them and they don't seem to mind them at all. We got many stares last night at Town Square and one guy finally asked "What is with the helmets, did they get separated or something?" That was really hilarious! I guess it wasn't too far fetched since today at the Dr. she showed me a pic of Egyptian twins who were conjoined at the top of the head and they wore the bands. Funny. Anyway time to pay attention to the little girl!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That is so freakin funny! The nylon over their heads could make me laugh for hours. That's good they're wearing them though. Even better that they don't mind them. I can only imagine the odd stares you guys get. They probably think you're a new breed of "pageant parents". You're "football fanatic parents" now. Good job with the painting. Very creative. I'm proud.

Those did turn out darling! It think they are much better than the white... gives them character. They couldn't have looked cuter at that Dr. appt.

You will have to help me paint one for Naomi cause I am SURE she will have to have one.

Oh my goodness Jek! That brought back so many memories for me. My soon to be 8 year old wore a DOC Band for 10 months! She was casted at 2 months (she looked like an alien!) That's so awesome they do the 3D thing now!
We had a great orthotist out of Burbank who we really felt lucky to get, since DOC Bands were just becoming a new thing instead of the helmet.
I love the football look! I can't believe you did them yourself! When Megan needed a 2nd band I tried to forgo my professional painter lady, and do it myself...it didn't work. She had to fix my paint job!
Such cute pictures!
